WBUR Announces Newsroom Fellowship 2022 Call For Submissions

This article is more than 1 year old.

WBUR , Boston’s NPR News Station, announced today the next call for submissions for the WBUR Newsroom Fellowship. The Fellowship is a yearlong program for recent graduates or early-career journalists who are looking to build reporting and production skills and have a demonstrated commitment to advancing issues of underrepresented voices in public radio.

For the first time, WBUR will select two Fellows for the program who will each receive a salary of $55,000 in addition to a complete Boston University benefits package. The Fellowship provides hands-on training in every aspect of public media journalism. Fellows will develop their skills under the guidance of WBUR’s editors and producers and will contribute to each part of the newsroom, rotating every three months, maximizing exposure to the many aspects of public media, including newscast, live broadcast, digital and reporting.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the inaugural year of the fellowship has been a tremendous success for everyone involved. We all learned an enormous amount from one another. We are grateful to be able to now build on that experience and expand the fellowship to two aspiring public media journalists in 2022.

Dan Mauzy, Executive Editor of News at WBUR

Last year, Hafsa Quraishi, a graduate student pursuing a master's in journalism, was selected as the inaugural WBUR Newsroom Fellow. Through the fellowship she's developed her voice on-air as a broadcast journalist and newscaster, produced dozens of segments for Radio Boston, and sharpened her digital storytelling skills.

“The rotating aspect of the WBUR Newsroom Fellowship has allowed me to experience all sectors of broadcast and digital journalism and gain a well-rounded understanding of every facet of public media,” said Hafsa Quraishi. “I look forward to finishing out the year at WBUR and using my experience to continue to tell the stories of underrepresented communities.”

The fellowship will run from January through December 2022. Applications, open now, are due by September 15, 2021, and finalists will be notified by November 8, 2021.
